Carbon Fiber Strand Tensile Failure Dynamic Event Characterization

In this three hour course, the engineer will learn about the physics of strand failures by applying several imaging systems and the four different NDE techniques that were employed. Exemplar imagery taken during task performance, particularly many high-speed videos of strands showing strand failure in lengthwise tension is also featured. Throughout this course, engineers learn the methodology used to assess carbon fiber tensile failure. Engineers learn several strand failure modes including center, grip, and split failure. Engineers learn the downfalls, error sources, and benefits of using many imagery technologies including high-speed video imaging, digital image correlation, thermography and more.
Engineers who take this course learn about measuring carbon fiber strand failure and the analysis methods for such. This includes gaining familiarity with analyzing thermography images, Microfocus CT scans, and load displacement charts. Engineers who take this course will gain more confidence with assessing experimental and current materials for tensile failure. After taking this course, engineers testing carbon fiber strands, or alternative materials, will also have more familiarity with testing and evaluating the material’s failure mechanisms.
